Benefits of university
Many of the activities and resources which GROWS delivers focus on university and why your child may want to go. There are many reasons why you and your child might want to consider university as a future option for them. Here are just a few of the things you might want to think about.
Better job prospects
Having a degree can give your child access to more of the jobs market. 26% more jobs are open to someone with a university degree nationally. In Gloucestershire that figure is even higher at 36%. By 2027 55% of jobs will require qualifications beyond sixth form/college.
Increased earning potential
University graduates earn on average £250,000 more across their lifetime = £10,000 a year.
Targeted career choices
Some careers are only possible with a degree, such as doctor, dentist, vet, pharmacist, teacher, lawyer and nursing. If your child / young person wants to pursue any of these (and others) they will need to have a university degree.
A chance to gain key skills
University students learn a number of valuable soft skills which make them more attractive to future employers.
Study an area of interest
University provides the opportunity for your child / young person to study a topic they enjoy in more depth. There are over 50,000 different courses available at higher education which means they are likely to find something they would really like to study.
Greater independence
University gives young people the opportunity to develop their independence, especially if they choose to move away from home to study. Living away from the comfort of home, managing their own money and balancing study and free time are all typical experiences. They will also have to get themselves to lectures on time and perhaps get a part time job. All of this will greatly enhance their independence and help them to gain vital key skills for living independently.
New opportunities
Going to university can provide your child / young person with lots of new opportunities. These include meeting new people from all over the world, the chance to study abroad for a semester, joining new clubs and playing a new or a favourite sport.
